Leinster House

Leinster House
Located in central Dublin, the seat of Irish National Parliament, incorporating Dáil Éireann (The House of Representatives) and Seanad Éireann (The Senate), has a rich and vibrant history. Designed by German architect, Richard Cassell, it is one of the grandest buildings in Dublin and is believed to have inspired the design of America’s iconic White House. It was originally known as ‘Kildare House’ after the Earl of Kildare, who commissioned it to be built from 1745 to 1747, and was claimed for parliamentary use in 1924 following the creation of the Irish Free State. It inspired surrounding streets of wonderful Georgian architecture that make up Georgian Dublin, and the first balloon ascent in Ireland took off from Leinster Lawn (1783).

Visitors
are admitted when the House is not in session (Mon and Fri). Tours take 20-25 mins and are provided by the Oireachtas - the Irish Parliament, pronounced Ear-Ock-Tiss - ushers who have an historical and educational knowledge of the House. Those wishing to visit must be sponsored by a Member or their Embassy. Special events also take place such as Sept's Culture Night - an evening of culture and entertainment - photographic exhibitions, family days, and Open House Dublin where visitors can tour the corridors and visit the parliament chambers. There is usually an eight-week recess between July and Sept. For days and times contact the Events Desk at event.desk@oireachtas.ie.
