Rathfarnham Castle

Built around 1583, Rathfarnham Castle's long and complex history reflects that of its native country. It was originally built for Adam Loftus, Archbishop of Dublin, then Lord Chancellor of Ireland, and has changed hands many times over the centuries. Major 18th Century alterations transformed its fortified medieval edifice into that of a Georgian House. Tnteriors from this time, designed by Sir William Chambers and James 'Athenian' Stuart, can still be seen today. In the 19th Century, the majestic building fell into neglect, but was bought by the State in 1987 and declared a National Monument. Ongoing restoration and conservation work continues to uncover many layers of the castle's rich history. Guided Tours last approx 1hr, but bear in mind access is restricted for visitors with disabilities. During the winter tours can be arranged in advance, and the tearooms are open year round (10:00 - 16:00 during winter months).

Admission free, Groups of 10+ must pre-book. Max no. 20.
