Cremalat, a name that combines “crema” (cream) and “latte” (milk) in Italian, is a family-run restaurant, cheese shop, cheese factory, and Italian deli in Edenvale. Occupying a large, Tuscan-style building in a nondescript office park, it's not an immediately obvious place to come for lunch and deli shopping, but for fans of Italian cuisine a visit to Cremalat is a foodie pilgrimage not to be missed.

Founded by husband-and-wife team Claudio and Margaret Giustiziery more than 20 years ago, Cremalat specialises in Italian cheeses. Margaret's mother was from Campania and taught her daughter to cook from an early age, bequeathing Margaret with an excellent working knowledge of traditional rustic cuisine. Sadly Claudio passed away a few years ago but Margaret still maintains a strong presence in the Cremalat deli, which always hums with shoppers stocking up on the fantastic homemade cheeses.

At this Italian deli you can also buy high-quality imported Italian foodstuffs like gourmet pasta, cured meats and salami, coffee and olive oil, while also seeking out friendly advice on Italian food and cookery from the highly knowledgeable staff. After the bags have been filled take a peek through the glass window into the cheese factory and watch as the mouth-watering parmesan, gorgonzola and creamy mozzarella are produced and packaged. The cheese counter is beyond tempting and the creamy fior di latte mozzarella in particular is worth breaking your diet for.

Adjoining the deli and factory is the cheerful restaurant, La Cucina @Cremalat which offers a variety of Italian-style breakfast and lunch dishes, served, just as an Italian mama would make it for you, in huge portions. The pasta dishes in particular bear the mark of time-honoured authenticity. Plan ahead and a book a table in advance as the small restaurant is always very busy.
