Pity the UNMIK police from faraway lands who have to stay in this overpriced throwback to the Yugoslav era. Worn, weary rooms face dimly lit corridors. Once one of Pristina’s top hotels, now the stale deathly smell of Communism hangs in the hallways. The cheapest rooms have communal bathrooms.

Up on the hill east of the centre, and overlooking a field with UÇK war graves, the Lyon is a decent budget option for those willing to take taxis or slog up the hill. Rooms are compact, modern and clean but hard to heat in winter. The quiet rooms are at the back. The small bouncy rubber lion we spotted on the reception desk suggests the hotel management is victim of an unfortunate misspelling.

A great hotel, unfortunately stuck on the northeast edge of town. The Princi has elegant, spacious rooms, good business facilities and a great little entertainment centre with pool tables, pool and even a bowling centre.
