Jewish Cemetery

The 19th century Jewish Cemetery on top of Velania's Tauk Bahqe dates from the time that Pristina's Jewish community numbered some 1500 souls. It holds about 50 tombstones which are now overgrown with weeds. After 500 years of presence in Pristina since their immigration from Spain in 1492, the Jewish community that remained after the deportations of World War II was forced to leave in June 1999 and resettled in Belgrade.

I heard that the Jews moved from Kosova soon after the 2nd World War, not as a result of the Yugoslav war but as a result of bad economy. Albania was the only country to shelter and save Jews from the Nazis. Jews of Serbian origin moved to Belgrade but later many of them moved on to Israel. the cemeteries are in great condition thanks to Bill Clinton and the USA.
