Sadly, only a lone minaret marks the spot where once a mosque complex of nearly 300 square metres stood. The complex, named Arasta and dating back to 1594, held the mosque and crafts shops spreading to and even on top of the bridge across the river. In 1960, progressive planners decided to do away with it all so they could construct a grand new town centre that's fit for Socialist Man. The minaret which was left standing as a reminder of Arasta was renovated in 2007, and there are new plans to do away with the kiosks surrounding it to better emphasise the lost heritage.
