March thaw finally arrives
After nearly two months of below freezing temperatures, Riga has finally begun to thaw. Unfortunately, that also means that all of that snow and ice that's accumulated in Latvia’s capital this winter is wreaking havoc in different ways now. Old roofs, including those of the Riga Castle and the Arsenal Art Museum, have given way under the pressure of heavy, wet snow, icicles are crashing to the pavement below and the mounds of snow that were never removed are causing flooding problems. If you’re coming to Riga pack your rubber boots and perhaps a helmet to make sure that chunks of ice don’t fall on your head!
