Valmiera in your pocket
High above the banks of the Gauja river lies Valmiera, a city rich in history and culture. Once a part of the ancient Latvian kingdom of Tālava, the small town was incorporated by the Bishop of Riga in 1214 only to be occupied a few decades later by the Livonian Order, who built a castle here. Valmiera prospered and became a member of the Hanseatic League in the 14th century, but was decimated by bubonic plague in the 1620s. Prosperity returned under Swedish rule and continued until once again the city was destroyed by Russian troops in 1702.
Today Valmiera has its own independent theatre and a bustling nightlife which make it a hub of activity in northern Latvia.
Arriving in ValmieraValmiera is accessible by train and by bus. The latter is recommended, as the bus station is located directly across the river, just a few minutes walk from the centre of town. If you arrive by train, expect a very long walk or take a cab if one is available.
