World Choir Games
Latvians are proud to be known throughout the world as a nation of singers. Latvian folk songs or dainas were passed down from each generation to the next for centuries until they were eventually codified to create one of the world’s largest collections of oral folklore. Latvians held their first song festival in 1871 and they sang outlawed patriotic songs as a sign of defiance against the Soviet Union eventually winning their independence in what later became known as the Singing Revolution. It comes then as no surprise that Riga has the privilege of hosting the World Choir Games from July 9 - 19. Roughly 20,000 singers from 500 choirs in 60 nations across the globe will participate in the largest choir competition in the world. A number of gala concerts will also take place at different venues throughout Europe’s Culture Capital. For more information and tickets visit www.singriga.lv.
