Amber Night
Descend into the depths of the Reval Hotel Latvija, to find this sleek, stylish nightclub designed with an over 25 crowd in mind. Listen to Top 40 from the past three decades while you sip expertly poured cocktails served at two different bars. Hit the dance floor, relax on gold and black couches in the main hall or occupy one of the tables in the back that have built-in champagne buckets that change colour every few seconds.

Once known as Roxy, a dodgy club, where tourists were known to get ripped off, it appears that Babylon has changed little apart from its name. Hit the dance floor, have a seat on the couches upstairs and on stage, chill out in the bar downstairs or, like most people, scratch your head and wonder wh [...]

This vibrant hotspot is not another typical boring Riga techno club. In fact, it’s quite stylish offering a funky chill out room and several distinct areas on two levels which are all a part of the action surrounding the central dance floor. The music is fast-paced and progressive which is wh [...]

The interior of black and white designer ads and red neon is a bit lacking, but the food is tasty, albeit expensive, and the lunch special is good value for money. The glass box for smokers looks like a science experiment gone awry when full and the dizzying disco lights above the urinals might jus [...]

Underground music lovers, hip youth and over the hill travel writers, this is the stop where you get off. Indie groups and DJ’s from abroad, garage bands and an alternative crowd all co-exist happily in this club, one of the few to sponsor rock, hardcore, heavy metal, punk, reggae and experimental music genres. Watch the bands perform in two large rooms in the basement.

Although kind of depressing when empty, G.M.C. doesn’t bear any other similarities to the ailing General Motors Corporation. A variety of rooms, each decorated in a different style, are available not to mention an odd beer selection – Italian Peroni in bottles. You can hang out in the p [...]

Just look for the Godvil logo (a halo with horns) on the top of the clock tower of this converted factory. If it weren’t for the Russian pop music, one might think they’ve stumbled into a Vegas club for the well heeled. A long bar and dozens of tables surround a central stage and dance [...]

An admission fee of 5Ls buys you a pass to a variety of different clubs within the confines of a converted theatre that still bears the tell-tale signs of its original incarnation such as gilded decorations and ceilings as well as red velvet walls. However, the theatre-goers of yore would doubtless be shocked by the flashing lasers, smoke machines and go-go dancers with glitter-paint shining from their naked thighs. Drinks are reasonably priced and if you’re not into techno or Russian pop you can try the hip-hop club upstairs. The smouldering smoking section looks like a scene from Dante's Inferno.

Its name conjures up images of hordes of entranced people swaying along to soothing music, but Opium Dance is actually a relatively small candlelit cocktail lounge on the edge of Old Riga. Its motto ‘style and music’ might be a bit ambitious, but the drinks are fairly cheap and the Opiu [...]

It’s affirmative: the Colonel has gone AWOL. Since the mid-1990s, this was the only bastion of alternative music for a bohemian crowd desperate to avoid pop and techno music. The dark, industrial-style interior is still hip as is the retro cellar bar with pink shag carpeting on the wall, but what’s the point of drinking a fabulous cocktail to old Michael Jackson songs? What happened to the Clash, the White Stripes or even the Chili Peppers?

Although the cocktails at this cramped cellar club are quite cheap, they don't seem to be cheap enough for the groups of young kids outside getting fired up on hard liquor before making their entrance. If electronic music blasted at alarming decibel levels sounds good and you like camouflage colour [...]

Two Swedes and two locals have put their years of club experience together to open this huge venue only a block away from the Freedom Monument in the Vērmanes Park. Popular house music and international DJs entertain a crowd of Riga’s 25+ beautiful people while go-go girls dance above the bottles of the central bar. Nearly 22km of fiber optic cable in the chandelier and elsewhere set the mood with changing lights and drinks are ‘tax-free’ before midnight, meaning 21% cheaper. You can also hit the casino on the 2nd floor.

Space Dog’s typical orange and grey interior is nothing new, but it does have a few things of which to be proud apart from the attractive, hip crowd of bohemians that it draws. Cute bartenders, live music, local beer, a foosball table and, best of all, a Jägermeister shot machine are certainly nothing to sneeze at. During the day you can also order soups, salads and sandwiches and a smoking section (although by the looks of it not completely legal) is also available.
