Riga’s second Balsam bar is a hit with the in crowd and with good reason. The stylish brown interior of leather couches and chairs spread out over three rooms is warm and inviting, the expensive cocktails, including the ones made with Latvia’s national drink, are among the best the city has to offer and were it not for the chef’s apparent affection for dill, the pricey international cuisine would also get top marks. Located in a renovated 19th-century brewery on the edge of the city centre, this self-proclaimed sofa bar is hard to find and that’s the way the owners like it. Those in the know know that this is one of Riga’s hottest cocktail bars and many don’t mind queuing up at the weekend to sit on one of many couches that are each completely different in style from your grandma’s sofa to one you’d expect to see your doctor’s waiting room. With two large terraces and a funky, eclectic interior, colourful, hip and laid-back Milk is hard to beat. Sadly, on busy nights they often bar entrance to non-Latvians.

Skyline Bar

A visit to the Skyline Bar has become a mandatory stop on the well-travelled tourist routes of Riga and this fact is reflected in its largely foreign clientele. The views are spectacular and the retro interior of shag carpeting, comfortable couches and an abundance of pillows is warm and inviting.
