Riga | By night | Pubs

Walk past the pool, air hockey and Latvian novuss tables on the ground floor and take the stairs down to the Beer Club, where you'll discover a cosy, rustically decorated cellar pub with perhaps the city’s best selection of local beer on draught for incredibly low prices – about 1Ls per mug! Plenty of tasty, yet inexpensive Latvian food like pork knuckle and potatoes is also on offer and smokers are definitely welcome. [...]

A long way from Spain, this bright orange bar across the street from the Skonto stadium lacks paella, but certainly has no shortage of thirsty Latvian football fans. Inexpensive foreign and domestic beer on draught, as well as cheap filling meals, satellite sports on TV, a smoking section and an ex [...]

Solid wood furniture, a cosy atmosphere and assorted Benelux decorations aren't the only things that make this place an authentic Belgian beer bar. A whole page of the menu is dedicated to steamed mussels, sausages are ordered by the half metre and tasty brews from the Low Countries are served in t [...]

Tucked away in a cellar at the far end of Tērbatas is Brālis, or Brother. Named after the amazingly cheap micro-brew that's served here, its leopard pattern booths and fake brick bar won’t win any awards, nor will its standard menu, but its simplicity and lack of pretension [...]

The Jolly Sisters offers a small space with beige walls, half a dozen tables and a worn hardwood floor as well as an international menu with prices that reflect its location within this labyrinthine medieval courtyard. We recommend you skip the standard cuisine and choose one of the cheap Latvian specials it serves like grey peas with bacon or herring and boiled potatoes. You could also join tourists and local hipsters for a mug of local Cēsu or Czech Krušovice beer.

Named after a classic 1960s Latvian film, Captain Enrico’s Watch is a cosy bar decorated with antique wooden furniture including the solid tables adorned with ancient termite holes. International food is on offer from salads and pastas to steaks and even duck, but don’t overlook the app [...]

The designer of this kitschy place has seen one too many westerns, but we love it just the same. Relax outside in one of the best summer courtyards the centre has to offer, head down to the slot machine hall optimistically labelled the gold mine (zelta raktuves) or go down to the bar for beer and cocktails under cattle skulls and wagon wheels. Food is served 12:00 - 24:00.

Once upon a time three Latvians met at a school in Münster, Germany and 20 years later they opened a real German kneipe, or pub, in Riga spelled Knaipe so the locals would pronounce it correctly. Drink delicious Paulaner helles or hefe-weizen brews on draught, eat imported Bratwurst, halbes Hähnchen (half a roasted chicken) or Schweine Haxe (pork leg) all served with a generous side of Pommes mit Mayo (fries with mayonnaise) of course. German wines are also available and you can take advantage of the large outdoor terrace in summer or watch a Bundesliga match inside when it gets cold. [...]

Paddy Whelan's Irish Pub & Sports Bar
Although it's considered a traditional Irish pub it's also a sports bar dedicated to the finer things in life – namely football and formula one. On the ground floor you can expect a dozen or so flat screen TVs showing different matches, while upstairs you'll find a cosier atmosphere with loads of memorabilia on the walls including a portrait of Pierluigi Collina. In addition to the usual Irish and international pub food, Paddy's also offers a menu of authentic Indian cuisine cooked in a real tandoor.

Latvia’s first fire fighting theme bar is chock full of antique helmets, water pumps and fire hoses that double as lamps, but its best feature is a selection of just over 20 foreign and domestic beers on draught. A wide variety of different meats are cooked over a real charcoal grill, but be [...]

When this place was known as Groks, it was the most notorious perpetrator of tourist scams in Latvia. After Riga In Your Pocket and its readers brought this to the attention of the local media, it soon shut its doors. To our horror and dismay it was re-opened as Lord Pub, but police raids, bad press and your comments once again put them out of business - for a time. But now it appears that we were too hasty in our celebrations. Royal Pub has opened its doors. Don't even look at it! Run away!

The kind of place where you wish everybody knew your name. It's totally Latvian in its beer, food, and frequenters, who are usually playing chess, playing cards and exchanging anecdotes. If the thought of seeing another tourist makes you queasy, head here to hide and enjoy some of Old Riga's cheape [...]

Sonali Pub
The owners of this place just may have set a world record or at least a European one. As far as we can tell this could be the only 24-hour sports pub and Chinese bistro pretty much anywhere with perhaps the exception of a few places in China itself. Drink Guinness, Staropramen or Tērvetes [...]

As our faces registered the sight of dark red walls and matching curtains the friendly waitress confided in us that she also thought the interior was reminiscent of a tart’s boudoir, but she assured us that the food and drink were just fine. A menu of standard cuisine including 6Ls steaks and a cheap lunch special are available as well as a digital jukebox and a smoking room with a pool table and dartboard. A dozen or so different beers can be had here for around 2Ls, but at least one beer is usually on sale for under 1Ls which certainly attracted our attention.
