Riga | Food & Drink | Cafés

This upmarket coffee shop and restaurant sells delicious home-made cakes and biscuits downstairs and offers a small menu of international cuisine upstairs in what looks a bit like a floor of a Venetian palazzo, but with views of the Riga Esplanade instead of the Grand Canal. A business lunch i [...]

The location on Alberta iela, Riga’s most impressive outdoor art nouveau gallery, will no doubt guarantee this small café a steady clientele of tourists. The interior includes photos of the city’s most picturesque façades and even antique-style streetlamps as lighting, but the cost of a slice of bread with a few toppings seems like a lot to pay for a ‘sandwich’. If however you’re in the mood for a piece of cake, a cappuccino or a glass of Stella Artois then it might be worth a visit.

Stylistically, this smart café and cocktail bar with comfortable red couches and collages of old posters advertising Alfred Hitchcock films can certainly hold its own with the city's trendiest establishments. Unfortunately, the international cuisine, although reasonably priced, doesn't [...]

It might be best to leave the kids at home as the team of chocolatiers hard at work making delicious candy in the corner may be too much of a temptation for the little dears. Friendly staff are keen to offer useful suggestions from sinfully rich drinks to enjoy on the premises or chocolates to take [...]

Yes, it has one of the silliest names we’ve seen in a long time, but I love you also happens to be one of the most stylish little cafés in Old Riga. Dark wooden chairs, plush blue couches, exposed brick walls and hardwood floors create a cosy atmosphere for cocktails or tasty salads and sandwiches. Two-course daily lunch specials can be had for 4.50Ls and a delicious Tērvetes beer will run you 2Ls. [...]

One of Riga's funkiest cafés, The Room overlooks a trendy gallery below, offers limited seating and has no menu to speak of. The chef asks each diner what he fancies eating and roughly how much he'd like to spend and then sets off to work. Cocktails, beer and coffee can also be had at this culinary experiment where art and gastronomy collide. [...]

Although a better beer selection would be welcome, most of the arty types that hang out here appreciate the [...]

The aroma of cinnamon, chocolate and coffee is sure to lure you into this upmarket café, but remember that luxury doesn’t come cheap. The walls are decorated with ads for sweets and liqueurs from the 1930s and the display case of fluffy pastries and rich cakes is guaranteed to have you salivating within seconds of your arrival. It takes an age for the huge sugar crystals to dissolve in your tea, but the Cinnamon Confectioner’s was created with lounging and lingering in mind. [...]

Providing a less-photographed angle of the Roland statue, this ornate café is set right across from city hall. Look out on the architecturally confused square while sipping deluxe coffee and sneaking some chocolate fondue. Do not tap on the glass — it will only puzzle the tourists w [...]

The first of opera director Andrejs Žagars' many café ventures, and the only one to survive, Osiris found a successful recipe in the mid-1990s and stuck with it. Inexpensive breakfasts, sandwiches, international cuisine and a romantic ambience make this place a favourite of local big shots, politicians and intelligentsia so make a reservation for dinner. The only drawback is the horrible iron tables that were obviously created as torture devices for long legs. [...]

This Italian-style café of the old school boasts an early 20th-century interior of crystal chandeliers and red marble tabletops which is only befitting of Old Riga’s most impressive Art Nouveau building. It’s more of a place to sip coffee and chat or to read the paper than it is a place to eat a huge meal, but a small selection of delicious panini, salads and deserts are available. [...]
