Riga | Food & Drink | Asian

Although the location in a popular shopping centre may lack intimacy, this stylish restaurant is a must see for hungry yuppie shoppers who can choose dishes from two separate menus – one Chinese, the other sushi. The former offers an excellent selection of dishes not offered elsewhere in Riga [...]

Although the interior of bamboo, faux leopard skin couches (with matching plates no less) and fluorescent Polynesian landscapes that would make Paul Gauguin weep may not be to everyone’s taste, the Chinese and Japanese cuisine is actually quite good. Start with dim sum, sushi or tasty spring rolls and move on to delicious mains like the crispy chicken. Exotic dishes like crocodile, kangaroo and rattlesnake are probably more expensive than your hotel room. [...]

Frequented by lawyers, auditors and diplomats from the surrounding offices and embassies, not to mention moneyed bohemians, Mo Bar offers a unique interior of white and green walls and tables, funky paintings and installations by local artists as well as artificial turf for carpeting. The concoct-your-own Asian cuisine isn’t bad and the 3.50Ls lunch special is a bargain, but charging 0.30Ls for a slice of lemon seems petty and MTV is a poor choice of soundtrack for a trendy bistro.

Judging by the friendly, almost Zen-like service and the beatific smiles on the faces of the wait staff, one would think that enlightenment was on the menu, but sadly sweet and sour, garlic and kung pao dishes with beef, poultry, pork or seafood will have to suffice. The absurd interior and costumes worn by the wait staff prove that Dadaism isn’t dead. Although soups and main courses are on offer, most people choose the ‘food market’ which is essentially a Mongolian barbecue. Pick a sauce (coconut curry, mango ginger, etc.), take a bowl and fi [...]
