Christmas markets and killer icicles
What’s winter like in Riga? It’s dark and bitter cold with plenty of snow and belligerent icicles that hang from the old town’s medieval buildings like miniature swords of Damocles. The mighty River Daugava also freezes during a proper cold spell making it an unusual meeting place for ice skaters, inebriated ice fishermen and pedestrian commuters taking advantage of the ‘land bridge.’ The fishermen are the most interesting of the aforementioned bunch. Often seen around town on the way to the river with grizzled beards, stained Soviet-era winter gear and giant augers for drilling through the ice, they put one in mind of Yukon gold rush prospectors.
This winter take a stroll among the food and crafts stalls of the Riga Christmas Market on Dome and Līvu squarea in December and buy some gingerbread and mulled wine. In January, Dome Square will host a variety of events dedicated to the brave Latvians who defended Old Riga from Soviet troops in 1991.
