Balle can mean a formal ball as well as a more relaxed dance or even a party and this place leans more toward the latter than the former. In fact, the whole layout of this one-room bar decorated in maroon and gold colours and black floral prints is designed to get people moving. Long couch-like benches cover two walls of Balle, while the rest of the space is completely open for mingling, dancing and carousing. The music is very Latvian, which is to say that hits from the 1970s through the 1990s are played here, but think Kim Wilde and UB40 and not Led Zeppelin or Pearl Jam. Pricey cocktails are king here, so if you’re into draught beers you might want start your balle elsewhere.
