Located in a labyrinthine Old Riga cellar, the aptly named Folk Club Cave claims to be the only establishment in the nation to offer frequent live performances by local folk groups and we’re inclined to believe them. Although it serves an excellent selection of domestic beer for affordable prices as well as genuine Latvian meals from kotletes (a type of meatball) and grey peas with bacon to hard-to-find country dishes like pork and pearl barley stew, you shouldn’t expect a kitschy pub à la the LIDO restaurants around town. The place has plenty of atmosphere and a private courtyard terrace, but it also has an authentic neighbourhood feel, which is why it’s so popular with locals – both students and suits.
