Latvian Ethnographic Museum

  Brīvdabas 21      (+371) 67 99 45 10     more than a year ago
Take the trip to the north shore of Lake Jugla and you'll be rewarded with nearly 90 hectares of life as it used to be. Farmsteads, windmills, fishing villages, churches and other historic structures have been moved here from their original locations throughout the Latvian countryside and preserved for posterity. Watch craftsmen perform various tasks or try some Latvian food and drink in the tavern. Although the buildings and the ticket office close at 17:00 you can wander around the grounds until 20:00 in the summer. Take bus N°1 from Brīvības bulvāris (near Tērbatas iela) to the Brīvdabas muzejs stop. It's also an easy 30-minute bike ride from the centre or you can take tram N°1 to the last stop and follow the bike path the rest of the way to the museum.

I visited this The Open air Museum on a sunny day in September '08. Set in woodland beside a beautiful lake this is a great place to visit. You can see houses from all over Latvia, go inside most of them and see room settings as they would hade been in years gone by. Various craftsmen performing their skills, dressed in traditional costumes. Snacks, meals, & souvenirs are available. There are picnic areas also available.Spend the day wandering through the history of Latvia in a lovely setting...not to be missed!!
