Everything from expensive white tablecloth dining to potato-based local dishes served in humble surroundings are on offer in Kaunas. With very few exceptions service is if not appalling then at least indifferent, so if you want to have a good time eating in the city your best option is to leave your Western expectations at home or take a few friends along to cushion the blow. What’s the point in travelling somewhere different if everything’s the same anyway? Tipping is only necessary in better restaurants and places where you feel it’s deserved. The norm is around 10%, or you can simply round up the bill.

I remember my first visit to Zalias Raitas in October 1999. It was cold and rainy that night. The place had a nice fire going and the atmosphere was outstanding. I've been back several times. It's a gem. The food is okay too.[...]
I've been to Miesto Sodas on Laives Aleja probably 50 times between 1999 and 2005. It was one of my favorite places for lunch in Kaunas. Reasonably priced good food and drinks, a pleasant atmosphere, with fairly good service.[...]

We know a lot of things but I must confess that we don't know if there's a sluice in the dam in the Kaunas Sea. There's a good list of water-related contacts in Kaunas on the city's tourist information website. Alternatively you could contact the TIC directly.
