Well worth seeking out during the summer (it tends to go to sleep a bit in the winter), this exemplary folk-themed restaurant hidden away off the street of its address immediately behind the Park Inn hotel attracts a mixed crowd of locals and tourists not for its Disneyland credentials but because it’s a genuinely fine place to visit. The décor is kitsch without going over the top, the waitresses scurrying about in folk costumes are friendly and the food is hearty, filling and good value for money. Surplus to the regular goings on are the occasional appearance of folk musicians on hand to serenade diners as they digest.

Finding this restaurant from the direction of Laisves in a total darkness (evening in January)was quite an adventure. There was no live music, although city brochure said otherwise (music in Fri/Sat). The waiter looked at us when we entered, but didn´t smile, nod or anything. In the whole evening there were two other customers. The fire in the fireplace died soon after we came. The food was ok but not superb. The dessert "rye-bread ice-cream" was an icy sorbet of a taste of herbs and strong spirits, nothing to do with an ice cream. Anything so awful I´ve never had. Sorry to say the visit was quite a disappointment, since we had heard positive comments about Zalias Ratas.
I had a wonderful time visiting Lithuania, and while we were in Kaunas, we did include Zalias Ratas. We were happy with the service, the food, and the wait staff was great. Lithuania is great. We would definitely go there again.
I remember my first visit to Zalias Raitas in October 1999. It was cold and rainy that night. The place had a nice fire going and the atmosphere was outstanding. I've been back several times. It's a gem. The food is okay too.
This is by far the best place i ate whilst in Kanuas and believe me there were many.
