Ninth Fort [Devintas Fortas]

This early 20th-century fort was the last in a series constructed by the Russians to defend the western border of their empire. Under Nazi occupation Jews were imprisoned here before execution in the killing fields behind. It wasn’t just Lithuanian Jews who perished here. ‘We are 500 Frenchmen’, Abraham Wechsler of Limoges carved into the wall before his death. The fort is now the site of one of the country's better museums focusing on the extermination of Jews, as well as the deportations of Lithuanians by the Soviets and the other uses of the building in its 100-year history.

Admission 5/3Lt.
