Unveiled in 1928 to commemorate the knygnešiai (book smugglers) who risked their freedom and sometimes even their lives illegally importing books in the Lithuanian language into the country from East Prussia during the Russian print ban between 1864 and 1904, this lovely little brass monument is the work of the Lithuanian sculptor Juozas Zikaras (1881-1944), and stands in a secluded area along with some other interesting pieces of public art immediately to the left of the Military Museum.
