The memorial to the 19-year-old student Romas Kalanta who, on May 14, 1972, set himself on fire on this spot to protest against the Soviet system. Called Sacrifice Field, it was officially unveiled 30 yeras to the day after the event and is made up of cast iron sheets represnting the burnt pages of history and 19 stones symbolising the years of Kalanta's brief life. May 14 is now the National Day of Civil Resistance.
