Located in the house where Maironis (see Monuments) once lived, all this outstanding museum needs to be perfect is explanations in English. Don’t let that stop you having a look around though, especially with the help of a translator. Spread out over several floors are a number of displays looking at the life of the great man himself and Lithuanian literature in general plus temporary exhibitions and a tour of a former prison that was once in the cellar. Of particular interest is a door that plays a mechanical tune when it opens and an eerie 3D picture of Christ over a bed. Also don’t miss the display of Soviet- and gulag-related paraphernalia, which features some extraordinarily optimistic Soviet-era posters. Note that the wearing of a pair of daft plastic bags on your feet is compulsory here.
Admission 5/2Lt.
