Featuring over 270 species that call this place home, the Lithuanian Zoological Gardens (the only zoo in the country) was founded by Tadas Ivanauskas (see Museums) in 1935, opening some four years later. Set in 16 hectares of woodland next to the Girstupis river at the far eastern end of Ąžuolynas, the zoo has been courting controversy for a number of years due to effect of a lack of funds on the quality of life of its inhabitants.
