A continuing Old Town success with a strong Latin theme, El Calor is a splendid mix of cocktail bar, nightclub and cabaret. Full at the weekends with good-looking young things, it’s a recommended venue for a good night out with a crowd despite the cocktails not being that much to write home about. This is also the prime spot in town for salsa lessons, albeit in Lithuanian only.

Lurking in the deepest, darkest depths of a Soviet-era housing estate, Kalifornija is the kind of place nice people warn you not to visit which of course only makes you want to visit. Essentially a scruffy and entirely unpretentious proletariat disco, nights here are legendary to say the least. If you don’t like your thumping pop music banal, your young ladies in little more than a lacy handkerchief and your men bald, staring and drunk then stay away. If you do like to jump in at the cultural deep end on the other hand, a taxi costs about 15Lt. Every taxi driver in the city knows where it is.

Over-21s, preferably with their own BMWs, sharp suits and accompanying dollybirds need apply. If they do make the grade and manage to squeeze past the weightlifters on security they should expect the cream of the city’s new rich celebrating their wealth amidst red PVC seating and vast Martini signs. Appropriate DJs, live bands and cabaret acts complete the show.

Kate Bush parties, drunken student nights, the occasional half-decent DJ and plenty of live music, all for your delectation inside a sweaty room complete with flashing lights by the train and bus stations.
