Blacksmith's Museum

  Šaltkalvių 2, 2a      (+370) 46 41 05 26     more than a year ago
This sensibly old-fashioned museum does exactly what it sets out to do, namely to help provide a better understanding of the craft of the blacksmith by way of two floors and a garden of artefacts ranging from intricately fashioned weather vanes to traditional metal gravestones. Located at the site of the award-winning pre-war blacksmith Gustav Katze, be sure to read the words on the ceramic grave inscriptions and feel free to enter the small building outside.

Compact, but fascinating little museum.Unhelpful and rude curator, who closed up half an hour before the museum was due to close at 6.pm. The black metal crosses in the yard, are from the original cemetery which was ransacked and the metal sold sometime in the 70's. The work shop at the back has 2 friendly blacksmiths working on their projects. The museum hosts the symbolic key to the city of Klaipeda. Well worth a visit.
