Thomas Mann Memorial Museum [Thomo Manno Memorialinis Muziejus]

Thomas Mann Memorial Museum
The Nobel Prize-winning German author of Death in Venice, Doctor Faustus and scores of other novels, short stories and essays, Thomas Mann (1875-1955) spent the summers of 1930 and 1931 in Nida, and this is the building he had constructed in which to do it in. The cottage, which overlooks the lagoon, is now a museum, and many of the rooms have been given over to exhibits charting the man's fascinating life both here and abroad. Unfortunately everything is in Lithuanian and German only, so unless you speak one of the above languages you’re going to need the help of a translator to get the best of the place. A tour of the museum with an expert offers a fascinating way to spend an hour or so whilst in Nida.

Admission 4/2Lt.

But if you do read either Lithuanian or German, then there are many family photos and personal items, all of which give a fairly comprehensive picture of Thomas Mann's family life, the various fates of his children, etc. There's also a fair amount about his writings, his opposition to Hitler, and his life in the US. Very much worth visiting if you have the language question resolved.
