Public transport
Šiauliai is served by an excellent if somewhat dilapidated system of city-run buses in varying states of disrepair. Should you need one, purchase a ticket from the driver for 1.60Lt or get one beforehand from a kiosk for just 1.40Lt. Tickets need validating in the little red punch-boxes on board all vehicles. Private minibuses also plough the streets and can be flagged down anywhere. Pay the driver 1.60Lt and tell him when you want to get out. Confusingly, at least for those who knew the old system, private minibuses recently changed their route designations and at the time of writing were displaying two numbers on the front of each vehicle. Unless you speak the lingo or are keen to get thoroughly immersed in the local way of life, your best bet is to avoid public transport altogether. The Tourist Information Centre publishes a good free map of the city’s public transport routes if you’re still not convinced. Bon voyage!
