The first Gubernija factory dates back to the late 17th century, and since then the company has had an interesting and illustrious time. During the period of Russian rule from 1795 to 1915, banned Lithuanian-language literature was hidden on Gubernija property, and before WWII the Lithuanian narrow gauge railway network ran a line directly into the factory ensuring a rapid distribution of the their products. The company was privatised in 1996, and now produces a range of beers, gira, and other soft drinks.
