Opened in 1701 or 1748 depending on which source you read, the desolate and depressing open space where the city’s Jews once laid at rest was closed in 1965. A small, graffiti-spattered memorial stone lies at the former entrance with only a few broken graves still to be found. The stone wall that once surrounded the cemetery only survives along its northern border. Pillaged by uncultured Soviet officials and their willing Lithuanian accomplices, a small part of it has been unceremoniously incorporated into the flight of steps near the Cathedral know as Aušros Takas.
