The tacit rule of thumb for Lithuanian monuments appears to be that if it’s male it’s standing up, and if it’s female it’s sitting down. This 2003 statue of a woman by the Lithuanian sculptress Dalia Matulaitė, also responsible for the Lazdynų Pelėda monument in Vilnius, conforms to the rule rather nicely. In the pipeline for a couple of decades before finally getting the go-ahead,
Aušra (Auszra) was the name of the Lithuanian nationalist revival movements of the late-19th and early 20th century as well as the moniker of the first newspaper published in the Lithuanian language (1883-1886), and therefore plays a significant role in the hearts and minds of the locals.
