Sundial [Saulės Laikrodis]

Sundial
A collaborative work of public art constructed as part of the city’s 750th anniversary, supported at the base by three works by the Lithuanian artists A. Černiauskas, R. Jurėla, and A. Vyšniūnas, find at the top of a four-metre pole the golden figure of Šaulys (The Archer) by Stanislovas Kuzma (b. 1947), from whence Šiauliai gets its name. A composite of concepts involving the sun, the archer and time, the sundial is inscribed with at the base with the numbers 12, 3 and 6, making up the date of the famous local battle that created the city.

First, I do love the ironic writing style of "inyourpocket" travel guide writers and enjoy it immencely. Great language. Great humour. Great tips. However, here are some remarks about the latest issue of "Siauliai in your pocket":1. "Pieno baras" is not a Soviet-era leftover. I don't know about the other bars belonging to this chain, but the one you describe appeared in Siauliai not too long ago. Definitely after 1990. Maybe the mangeress' head-biting is Soviet-style, but not the bar itself ;)2. Soviet soldier's plinth. Actually, there is no plinth. Sorry. The plinth was dismantled together with the Soviet soldier's monument back in 1991 or 1992 and now there's just a plain square left with no traces of former monuments. 3. The former Jewish synagogue belongs not to "some obscure Christian sect", but to the Roman Catholic monks. 4. The taxi fares are not as big as you mention. It should not cost more than 10 LTL to most destinations within the city limits. 5. The yellow hotel (Geltona) is actually south of the city (or south-west to be more exact), not north.Again, sorry for nitpicking. I do love your guides and I am very happy that one appeared about my native town (boring and hopelessly provincial backwater though it is, I know). I would be very happy to help you with the preparation of the next issue.
