Fire Engine Museum [Gaisrinių Automobilių Muziejus ]

Fire Engine Museum
Where most cities can’t summon up the energy or enthusiasm to open one fire brigade-related museum, Šiauliai opens two. This one’s run by the nice people who provide fire support services at the airport and is made up of a single hangar full of fire engines. There’s a story behind each one if you’re prepared to learn the language or take an interpreter along, plus children are allowed to scramble about inside them, beep the horns and generally have a good time. Most of the machines are modernish Soviet beasts although there are a couple of gems including a gorgeous converted 1957 Chevrolet 4400 complete with original wooden interior. Not easy to find, follow the road out to the airport, turn left onto Lakūnų and it’s the first collection of buildings on the right. If the hangar’s closed, alk to the far end building on the right and find somebody to open up for you.

Admission free.
