Vilniaus

The official tourist bumph about Šiauliai’s 900-metre pedestrian street claims that it’s the third oldest boulevard of its type in Europe. Made traffic-free in 1975, one can only assume that something’s been lost in the translation or the people who wrote this erroneous titbit don’t get out enough. Whatever. Running east-west through the centre of the city, Vilniaus was once the only place to shop but has since been giving several swift kicks in the teeth by a plethora of shopping centres aimed at, consciously or otherwise, putting the pedestrianised promenade out of business. Still a hugely popular place to stroll during the summer months, Vilniaus is sprinkled with shops, restaurants and bars as well as several extraordinary pieces of public art and will inevitably feature in any visit to the city.
