Žaliūkiai Wooden Windmill [Žaliūkių Medinio Vėjo Malūnas]

Built between 1875 and 1880 in the village of Žaliūkai which is now inside the city limits, the glorious, eight-sided, three-tier wooden windmill with a little hat on top once provided flour to the tsarist army. A typical example of its type, the windmill ceased operations in 1957 and sat idle for a decade before being taken over by the Aušra Museum. In 1970 the building was turned into a museum but has been closed for a number of years due to financial problems. With grateful help from Norway, the windmill is now slated for a complete and massive renovation project due to start in 2009 which aims to not only completely restore the windmill but to also add the adjoining miller’s house and to turn the entire complex into several exhibitions with a milling theme. Children and disabled locals will also be able to visit and learn several traditional folk crafts. Due to open some time in 2010, the mill is worth a look at now from the outside.
