Restaurants & Cafés

With a few amusing disasters and the occasional appalling exception, eating out in Vilnius is both excellent and relatively affordable for all. The city’s restaurants and cafés literally cater to taste buds of every persuasion, offering everything from vast plates of potato-based local specialities to a surprisingly wide and generally palatable concoction of dishes from the kitchens of such far away places as India and Brazil. Service continues to be the main stumbling block even in the most aristocratic of eateries, and is easily the subject from which the majority of visitors gain the most displeasure. Although the bulk of restaurants worth visiting can be found within the city centre, the suburbs also offer a few treats, which we list when we feel that the plaudits is deserving. Tipping, if deserved, is up to the diner, with 10 per cent or a rounding up of the bill both being acceptable.

Read the reviews and went to Zoe's. Pros: Great Garlic Soup. My meal cost about 16 Euros for soup (excellent), a Club Sandwich (low average) and 2 cokes). Kinda pricey. I was surprised to hear so much about the atmosphere as its very very average[...]

Have been to this place on two occasions. The first one was good and the second one very strange. But let's talk about the food first. The food we have had there so far has been really good, which means the chef is doing a good job. Unfortunately this place is missing an important ingredient, putting that little extra effort. For example, serving you a warm BBQ sauce instead of an ice cold one! Serve cold water instead of lukewarm. This is especially true for the way they decide to price the dishes. Let's round it up; you order a steak and you think potatoes are included in the already high price. Not so. In addition, we asked for a slice of lemon in the water, and instead got half a lemon that later appeared on the bill at a cost of 4 litas! Macabre! But this was in no way the worst.
The servant we had on both occasions, is not very well educated in neither waiting or manners. At the end while trying to pay with a credit card, he insisted to stand next to us waiting to sign the bill, while commenting that "service was not included". (Which we were very well aware of, and intended to leave it in cash.) This is extremely unpleasant behavior and would never have happened if we were not foreign. But that was not enough, he then asked where we were from, and nodded sarcastically, "yes, yes...". Needless to say, he didn't get anything after this and we will not return to this place again. Food:4, Atmosphere:3, Service: 1.[...]
