Vilnius | Restaurants & Cafés | Fun

The odd-looking crêpes served through the window of an old bus inside this quirky little Old Town pancake joint and art gallery are both good value and generally of a high standard. Provided you don’t mind eating one off a wonky table top, we recommend the Yin Yan, served with cheese and [...]

A long, thin affair that’s both a restaurant and bar, the Flea Pit is just itching to be investigated. The food covers a wealth of tastes from Thai to Italian, the beer and wine menu puts most Old Town places to shame and the décor is refreshingly different. Add to that a garden that’s a delight in the summer and fun to huddle in and smoke oneself to death when it’s freezing outside and you’ve got one of the top places to enjoy in town.

With its gold shiny curtains and glass fountain, eating in this large and magnificently kitsch restaurant is like having dinner on a 1960s cruise liner. The menu, which includes good pancakes and a passable steak, isn’t too bad, although the real reason to come here is when the cabaret act are doing their thing on the little stage for the benefit of a hardcore bunch of middle-aged ladies and gentlemen dancing on the dance floor below. Priceless, and one of the few places in town you can still dance in pairs the old-fashioned way.

If you're not afraid of lifts (or mediocre food for that matter) the Television Tower's lofty (160m) revolving restaurant is more than worth a trek out to the suburbs for. Little more than a canteen with a gimmick, the food is never truly disappointing, although it won't stay in the mind for much longer than it takes to get back to ground zero after ingestion is completed. Note that although it stays open until 22:00, they stop letting you in at 21:00.

Pleasantly surreal, and clearly named after the Belgium surrealist painter René Magritte, if you’ve got artistic tendencies you can use the pencils provided to draw on the paper-topped tables. With stark white décor and staff in braces and bowler hats it’s among the most interesting of restaurant interiors in town. It’s also a lot of fun, but the selection of Belgian beers is a bit limited and some of the meals are a little pricey.

If you ignore the mediocre food and service, the breakaway Republic of Užupis’ political home always promises something at least mildly amusing and heart-lifting. Inside, the cream of the area’s drunken poets can often be seen dreaming themselves unconscious, whilst the wooden [...]

Vilnius’ first foray into the world of instant wok nosh is a breath of fresh air. Mix your Asian menu from noodles, rice or mixed vegetables with a main dish and a choice of seven sauces and get it stir-fried in front of you in minutes. The result, served inside a small cardboard box, is good, if a little different from what you’re probably used to from ventures like these. The limited seating encourages plenty of noodle bonding and be careful with the spicy dishes, they may dissolve your fillings. Fun? Well strangely enough, yes. At least it is if you go with a friend or two and order different combinations for sharing.
