A Vilnius institution often full of people who should be in institutions themselves, the breakaway Republic of Užupis’ daft political headquarters also doubles as one of Vilnius’ must-see places to stop and have something to eat and drink. The interior has a mild Republic of Užupis theme, helped along by a clientele of colourful locals, whilst if you’re lucky enough to visit on a mild or even a sunny day, the riverside wooden terrace remains one of the top places to sit in the capital.

We were disappointed with our experience at Kavine Uzupis. It’s only plus is a nice location. Starting with untrained waitress who morosely cleaned the tables ignoring the customers, to so-so food – including tasteless cold beetroot soup, limp salad, and lamb-stew with 5 pieces pea-sized of meat there are better substitutes in this town. If you get lucky, you could get some free entertainment by sitting next to an “artist” doing the bohemian talk to some tourists in exchange for a free meal.
