Vilnius | Restaurants & Cafés | Lithuanian

Recently renovated by someone with more pots of pastel-coloured paint than taste, and a high school art student. It's a messy hotchpotch, but quite charming and comfortable. When it comes to giving tourists and travellers what they want, however, they hit the nail on the head. Traditional dishes are on offer among hearty yet less adventurous options. So if you don't want to try pigs' ears or something dragged in from the forest, you can stick with safe options like beef and chicken. The selection of drinks is also vast and includes Lithuania's most popular beers as well as some seriously dangerous mead. A good place to start your Lithuanian adventure. [...]

A fun-n-folksy kind of theme park where you get a cock in a box, rusty farm implements, hippy stiffs stuck in trees and a pond swimming with fountains and fish. They’re certainly not short of gimmicks. Food is cookie-cutter, churn-it-out Lithuanian. Gives you more of a hint than a real taste of authenticity. Still, for a chain-driven calorie factory (they could have called it McLithos, Calorie King, Potato Hut, etc) it’s fast, efficient and reliable. Note that the Gedimino location has a flock of Little Red Riding Skirts to frollic around and chat to the lads who choose to dine there on weekend evenings. Also at Gedimino 14, tel. 212 14 22. Good value and surprisingly good quality food in a tip-top tourist hot spot. Not only can we highly recommend it for Lithuanian food, but recent taste tests have revealed that they also cook steak much better than nearby restaurants that charge twice the price. The mock cottage atmosphere can be a bit corny but for a tasty and filling meal served with a smile and without interminable delays, this place is hard to beat. Also at Kubiliaus 16, tel. 278 87 95. Girls in folk costumes ferry an assortment of average Lithuanian and international dishes to a clientele of mostly local diners. The exposed antique ceiling and emphasis on the fact that the building is very old are used by the management as their key marketing tools, rather than anything useful su [...]

They offer edible zeppelins that are as big as a baby’s head. The blimp-shaped ‘cepelinai’ are huge grated potato dumplings with either a meaty or curd filling. Here they have a hand-made and rough-hewn quality and will leave you full and tummy-slapping satisfi [...]

Yet another pleasantly primitive local affair that will be appealing to lovers of Lithuanian food, taxidermy, and sexual stereotypes. The hall-like barn for blokes and unfussy fillies has animal skins on the benches and stuffed beasts scattered about peering at you. On weekends, ladies can din [...]

Simple but hearty village food (potatoes, slabs of crumbed meat, grass and carrots and more potatoes) churned out in a feed-em-fast franchise in a nice cottage-like interior. Not very conveniently located for the average tourist, but for a quick feed for a pittance this one is hard t [...]

Tuck your elbows in, duck your head and crouch down the narrowest staircase in town for the most atmospheric dining experience in town. There are plenty of traditional dishes, including plenty of gamey meats, and some interesting notes in the menu about local dining traditions. For all that noble authenticity, however, the meals are tough going. Expect folksy players to pluck up the atmosphere and blow a bit of spirit into the place on weekend evenings.

The surroundings have been hacked from trees, the food has been hacked from barn animals and it’s all a bit coarse in a very appealing kind of way. We highly recommend this place to anyone who must dine with children, as there are plenty of distractions to keep the little blighters happy, amused and, if you wish, in a distant room. There are also plenty of dishes that will keep them overfull, sleepy and manageable for a good while after you get home. Fun for everyone.

One of a clutch of restaurants that dish-up a locally-themed dining adventure aimed predominately at tourists, gnomes and Hobbits. This one has responded to the recent economic boom in fairy-tale fashion: there’re witches in the kitchen and trolls and zombies bumbling around no [...]
