Stag & Hen's Survival Guide

Stag & Hen's Survival Guide

Before you cast off the shackles of singledom, there's still one thing that must be done, and that is to give yourself over to friends for the obligatory Stag and Hen night. Tradition dictates that sallow-skinned hens need only a day at a spa followed by some retro disco dancing and a few innocent 'dares'.

Stags, meanwhile, demand the rugged outdoor life as befits their manly stature. We're talking paintballs, war games and a spot of mountain boarding followed by a heavy drinking session in several accepting hostelries.

It's the Grease Summer Lovin' synopsis writ large... and who are we to argue when Northern Ireland's Stag & Hen scene can give you it all.

For the Stags (or feisty Hens) Jungle Paintball (see listing), Try Skirmishing (t., Surfin' Dirt (t. and Todd's Leap (t. are all great action places at which to work up a sweat. And Hens (or metrosexual Stags) can contact any hotel and be assured of a spa option - either in house (Culloden (t. , Slieve Donard (t. and Radisson Roe (t. are particularly outstanding) or at a nearby beauty clinic. A stroll down Belfast's Lisburn Road will also unveil a few good spa options.

For those of you willing to go off-menu, why not indulge in a Choc-O-Bloc Chocolate Workshop or Paint Me Glaze Me art class with a difference and make your very own hen or stag souvenir (see listings).

And, no matter what your daytime activity of choice, there are just some things you simpy can't avoid. Sexy and silly accessories can be found at Bliss and hot wheels can be hired at Party Piglets (see listings). And check out our Nightlife section for the best bars and clubs in which to shake your booty. Ring ahead to ensure you can get in with a group - some clubs may even offer free VIP entry if you're super nice.

Belfast and beyond is getting used to the sight Stag & Hen revellers (Scotsmen must wear kilts - it's the rule), so get here soon to experience what may well be the best pre-marital night out of your life.

Still not convinced... here's a snippet from Alison Jones, a Cork Hen who - with our help - had the nght of her life right here in Belfast...

I just wanted to say a big THANK YOU for helping me arrange our hen party in Belfast.  It was a huge success and it’s safe to say all 18 of us had a fantastic weekend.  Most are saying they’d definitely come back again.

Friday night we started in Laverys where we met Tom the 81 year old singing legend!  We then ended up in Benedicts and M Club.  Brilliant atmosphere for a hen party, we even won a dancing competition!

Saturday we started off on cocktails in The Apartment, then continued in Robinsons and The Crown Bar.  We managed the Water Margin, then up to the Duke of York followed by the Northern Whig, Bar Bacca (loved this bar) then La Lea.

Everybody is raving about what a good weekend it was so again thanks for all of your work.  I hope to be coming back to Belfast very soon..

A.W.O.L Paintball
If your stag prefers combat games to kissograms or your hen is happy to forego a hangover, then a day out paintballing is just the alternative you need.

Over the border in Co. Monaghan, the gurus at A.W.O.L. Paintball have designed a number of activities to bring out the warrior in all of you. How about a game of Hunt the Stag, Pluck the Hen or - for a modern approach to your big day out - Stags v Hens?

And, if the blushing bride and her fragile friends are concerned abut being zapped by paintballs, there's always the gentler sport of Speedball.

This 'up close and personal' wargame is played across four themed fields with wrecked cars, bales and inflatibles allowing you to duck for cover before plotting your next attack.

A.W.O.L.'s 30acre jungle forest is kitted out with trenches, bunkers, forts, bridges and other camouflage obstacles. The perfect backdrop for that little khaki number... [...]

Combat Corps
Get ready to swap your civvies for camouflage as team combat comes to the Ireland’s largest outdoor activity centre. Combat Corps is a new painless, tactical, exhilarating activity now based at Co. Fermanagh’s Share Holiday Village.

Firing invisible, harmless infrared beams, teams traverse varied terrain - including a forest, indoor arena and nearby island - to seek and destroy the opposition. The environmentally-friendly outdoor arena utilises gullies, streams and man-made wooden obstacles to ensure no visual impact is made on the surrounding area. And, underlining the location’s eco-friendly ethos, Share Staff have also been trained to ‘Leave No Trace’ standards.

Stags & Hens - as well as Corporate Groups, Birthday Parties, Sports and Social Events – should head west and experience out this unique adrenaline rush. There’s plenty of on-site accommodation, and a variety of multi-activity combo packages, so you and your mates can make a weekend of it. For lots more info, get in touch with Celia at Share.

If you fancy a crack at kayaking or you're curious about coast leering, let Shane and his fully-trained team put together a range of pursuits to bring you up close and personal with the great outdoors.

Rivers, gorges, cliffs and the open sea are all waiting to be explored, and everyone from adventurous types to novices can enjoy the adrenalin rush. Coastal and inland areas are Shane's 'office' and provide the perfect backdrop for some amazing activities.

For the uninitiated, coast leering involves wearing a wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid and scrambling, rock-climbing and swimming your way round the dramatic North Coast. A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) picks you up and plonks you back on dry land.

You can also opt for a 150ft abseil plunging you into the open sea, white water canoeing in Co. Tyrone's Gortin Glen and climbing in Donegal, Portrush and the Roe Valley.

Activities are year-round, so why hibernate 'til Spring when you could be getting the blood pumping and experiencing a real natural high?

As Shane says, 'Don't just sit around and do bus tours, especially when we've one of best coastlines in the UK'. We couldn't agree more.

Sessions from half day to one week with overnights at campsites, lodges, hostels or hotels, depending on budgets and group requirements. Contact Shane for details of prices and activities.

Try Skirmishing
Tactics and teamwork combine in this adrenalin-fuelled 'Electronic Paintball' combat game.

Outdoor locations set the scene as clans yomp through woodlands, urban, snowfields or purpose-built battlefields tracking down their opponents and scoring points at medium and long range.

It's painless and fun and can be played by anyone aged 7+. Go one-on-one or in missions dubbed 'Capture the Flag' or 'VIP Escort', or opt for team-on-team combat in a skirmish 'Free for All'.

Infra-red weapons and sensors shoot an invisible and harmless beam with a range of 50-200 metres. Weapons can be programmed with 1-99 hit points and, when the 'beams' run out, will omit a groan indicating the end of the game and guaranteeing a cheat-free mission.

Try Smirmishing has six outdoor locations in Belfast, Fermanagh, Rostrevor, Craigavon, Ballymena and Auchnacloy. There are also sites in Co. Louth and at the National Shooting Centre, Bisley, England.

Stag and Hen packages can be arranged, so give them a call and surprise your special mate with a daredevil assault they'll never forget.

Wellbeing Health & Beauty Spa
Never before have Northern Ireland's hens been treated to such a magnificently luxurious experience.

Taking as its inspiration the ancient therapies of Morocco, Turkey and Egypt, this state-of-the-art Spa's exotic sounds, intoxicating aromas and dazzlings interiors will envelop you in a sensory world positively oozing relaxation and rejuvenation.

Revel in a reviving scrub, followed by cleansing body wrap and massage in the steamy Haman Room. Or, with room for four in the Rasual Chamber, why not get a group of friends together and indulge in some good clean mud fun?

The chamber is gently heated with steam and, as the mud dries, draws toxins from the skin. The ritual ends with a cleansing tropical rain shower to reinvigorate the body. Sounds heavenly.

In the Moroccan Bathing Room, envelop your body in minerals, oils and natural ingredients then float weightlessly on a warmed cushion of water as the gentle movements lull you into a deep state of relaxation. Tantalising treatments such as The Austrian Peat Bath, Chardonnay Bath, Venus Beauty Bath and Rose Blossom Bath ensure you come away walking on air.

For the ultimate bathing beauty, how about The Cleopatra Bath... a body wrap with free-floating bedding designed to infuse your skin with muds, creams and milks and relax stressed muscles and joints.

With many more body and beauty packages on the menu - and something for the men too - Wellbeing really has taken pampering to a new level... and put the tiny village of Sion Mills on the must-see map. Who would have thought?
