Strabane

Halfway between Derry and Omagh sits this Co. Tyrone border town which has seen more than its fair share of NI's troubled past but is now emerging as an attractively-placed outdoor activities hub... and one of Europe's foremost fishing destinations.

Walking enthusiasts eager to explore the surrounding Sperrins should head for the 48km Central Sperrins Way - the region's largest marked walking trail encompasing six sections radiating from beautiful Barnes Gap.

The undulating canvas really is breathtaking, with its sweeping uplands carpeted in pasture, heather and bogland, and interpretation panels revealing details of the area's history, flora and fauna.

Cycle routes cover 48-59kms, straddling every level of peddle power from flat valley floors to challenging highlands. All routes are well signposted, dotted with bike stands and info panels and usually stick to quieter roads.

The Central and South Sperrins Scenic Driving Routes allow for an altogether less energetic trip through this distinct landscape.

Some roads, particularly through Barnes Gap, are single lane, so keep an eye out for oncoming traffic and factor in pitstops to fully appreciate the scenery and enjoy some lunchtime refreshments in one of the many traditional pubs.

Fishing aficionados are particularly spoiled by Strabane's riverside location. The town sits at the heart of the Foyle River System, regarded as one of the Northern hemisphere's premier salmon and sea trout fisheries.

The Derg, Mourne, Dennet and Glenelly Rivers can, depending on weather conditions, be fished at high or low water, and an estimated 10,000 salmon are caught here annually, with brown trout and sea trout also in abundance.

Golf supremo Tiger Woods has dangled his hook in these very waters, so get your rod and reel down to these hallowed banks for some world-class fishing action. Fabulous!
