Golden Thread Gallery
On the fringes of the Cathedral Quarter stands this red brick building whose ground floor houses one of Belfast's coolest art galleries. The stark concrete interior lends itself perfectly to changing exhibitions of paintings, photography and installations. You'll usually find students from the nearby art college contemplating the contemporary local pieces and scribbling a few inspirational notes. Find the Gallery 2mins walk from the back of St. Anne's Cathedral and right beside Beggs & Partners bathroom showroom.

Ulster Museum
The Ulster Museum will be closed from September 2006 for a major 2-3 year refurbishment.

Inside this curious hybrid of 1960s concrete and neo-classical architecture lurks everything from the first mummy to be exhibited outside Egypt to a gleaming collection of Spanish Armada gold coins. Native Americana, Irish history, stuffed animals and prehistoric monsters add to the museum's all-round family enjoyment. The gallery wing features art from the 17th century to present day with paintings by Gainsborough, Turner, Reynolds and Irish artists Stanley Spencer and John Lavery. The gallery also features changing exhibits and the museum itself holds international exhibitions and personality lectures, has a well-stocked gift shop and a café serving some of the city's best apple cake and fresh cream.

The Nutcracker

Walk through a giant pop-up storybook version of The Nutcracker in W5's special Christmas and New Year event. The classic story of The Nutcracker and the King of Mice by E.T.A. Hoffman has become a Christmas favourite, and this unique version allows you to stroll through illustrated pages packed with magical moments and enhanced by Tchaikovsky’s famous score. Set on Christmas Eve, this much-loved tale features a little girl called Clara who, as night falls, is transported to a fantasy world where dolls come to life, toy soldiers battle with a gang of mice and Clara’s own Nutcracker doll is transformed into a handsome prince.  The duo take on the Mouse King, taste a mouth-watering trip to a kingdom made of sweets and visit the snow fairies in their icy kingdom. Finally, they join the Sugar Plum Fairy at the Prince´s moonlit castle for a grand finale.

This magical world was created with the help of award-winning Belfast-born children’s book illustrator P.J. Lynch whose series of six large scale “pop up” scenes bring the story to life. Combined with atmospheric lighting and elements of Tchaikovsky’s enchanting score this display will charm the senses and capture the spirit of the holiday season. Free with W5 admission. [...]
