Derry | Sightseeing | Tours

Busloads of Italians, Japanese, US tourists and backpackers are helping Derry achieve its undoubted potential as a tourist destination, according to Martin McCrossan of City Tours. The company has welcomed thousands of international visitors, including Japanese folk singer Kumiko Yokoi who has visited the city before and includes The Town I Love So Well - in Japanese - in her repertoire. 'Guided walking tours around the Walled City really helps give visitors a feel for Derry's history,' explains Martin. 'Some of them can get very emotional.' Martin and his team see each visitor as an ambassador for the city. 'We want to make sure they have a really positive experience,' he says, 'so, not only will they come back, but they'll also encourage others to visit as well.' Tourists have described Derry as 'beautiful', 'tranquil' and having 'coffee as good as Naples!'  Find out for yourself and join one of Martin's City Tours to discover how far Derry has come in a relatively short space of time. Tickets from £4pp. Group rates available.

Free Derry Tours
The modern history of Derry is synonymous with Bloody Sunday, and it is this aspect of the city's story that has inspired the introduction of the Free Derry Tours. Told by the same people who live in the Bogside - site of the Bloody Sunday atrocity - and saw the events at first hand, these tours are as authentic as you can get. The contemporary context is set with the 17th Century Siege of Derry, 1840s Famine and 1919-21 Irish War of Independence before going into the city's Civil Rights Campaign and the following events that shaped the Troubles and continuing Peace Process. The tour route takes in Free Derry Corner, Derry's Walls, the Bloody Sunday Monument, H-Block Hunger Strike Monument and Bogside Murals. Other Specialist Tours feature Derry's early Christian history, Murals & Monuments, The Unionist Perspective and trips to neighbouring Donegal and the Antrim Coast. Free Derry Tours leave twice daily year-round at 10:00 & 14:00 from the Museum of Free Derry, Glenfada Park, Rossville St., Bogside. Specialist tours - and tours in Irish, Spanish, French, German and Italian - can be arranged on request. [...]

If you fancy a crack at kayaking or you're curious about coast leering, let Shane and his fully-trained team put together a range of pursuits to bring you up close and personal with the great outdoors. Rivers, gorges, cliffs and the open sea are all waiting to be explored, and everyone from adventurous types to novices can enjoy the adrenalin rush. Coastal and inland areas are Shane's 'office' and provide the perfect backdrop for some amazing activities. For the uninitiated, coast leering involves wearing a wetsuit, helmet and buoyancy aid and scrambling, rock-climbing and swimming your way round the dramatic North Coast. A RIB (rigid inflatable boat) picks you up and plonks you back on dry land. You can also opt for a 150ft abseil plunging you into the open sea, white water canoeing in Co. Tyrone's Gortin Glen and climbing in Donegal, Portrush and the Roe Valley. Activities are year-round, so why hibernate 'til Spring when you could be getting the blood pumping and experiencing a real natural high? As Shane says, 'Don't just sit around and do bus tours, especially when we've one of best coastlines in the UK'. We couldn't agree more. Sessions from half day to one week with overnights at campsites, lodges, hostels or hotels, depending on budgets and group requirements. Contact Shane for details of prices and activities. [...]
