In December 2005 the UK's first gay and lesbian civil partnerships took place amid a hail of media coverage right here in Belfast.
We may have a stagnant political process, but it seems progress can be achieved on some levels.
While Belfast might not have the wildest and most flourishing of gay and lesbian scenes, there are more than enough varied bars, clubs and organisations to allow a good time to be had by all.
Despite embracing the Civil Partnership Act, Belfast's gay and lesbian scene is a little bit more shy and reserved than Dublin, and a veritable virgin compared with London.
However, as all seasoned travellers know, if you don't ask... you don't get. Northern Irish people are up for a good time and always on the lookout for new people to play with.
In recent years clubs, in particular the Kremlin and Mynt, have emerged to cater for the young twinks, while bars such as Union Street and Dubarrys continue to attract the more mature bears and their admiring cubs.
Most bars and clubs are located in the city's Cathedral Quarter so it may be handiest to take a taxi to your location of choice.
Once in the area, all venues are situated within walking distance of each other.
Sirens at Ten Square is the city's main lesbian get-together, but keep an eye on www.lick-women.com a lesbian club night that's held at Dubarrys the third Friday of the month.
If you fancy a tipple and want to sample the main Gay and Lesbian venues, just check out IYP's Gay Belfast While the more sophisticated traveller might be disappointed by the city's relatively low-key scene, with a bit of forward planning or advice from friendly locals, the chances of having a good night out are high.
Don't forget, Belfast people still find a foreign accent sexy and a real tan strangely exciting. Exploit your assets to their limits.
