Bogside Artists and People's Gallery

Bogside Artists and People's Gallery
Twelve large-scale murals along Derry's Rossville Street depict pivotal moments in the city's past from 1968-2008. Painted by the internationally renowned “The Bogside Artists ©”, the large-scale murals known as The People’s Gallery are visited annually by thousands of tourists each year and are seen by many more who come to explore the area where Bloody Sunday took place (see History).

Visitors can also head to the nearby studio of The Bogside Artists©, also called The People's Gallery, opened Dec 2009 by Nobel Laureate John Hume who is a staunch supporter and friend of the three artists (Tom and William Kelly, and Kevin Hasson ), as are ex-Bishop Daly and celebrated playwright Brian Friel. The gallery features a magnificent exhibition space  showcasing local artists, and you can also pick up books, t-shirts etc depicting the murals.

The artists also conduct walking tours that tell the stories behind their striking images, many of which are based on authentic photographic material from the era. What better way to explore these iconic images than with the local trio who made them possible? Incidentally The Bogside Artists©, who have exhibited worldwide and have a huge reputation in Europe, were the recent recipients of the very prestigious “Josef Beuys-Richard Demarco - Artists of Achievement Fellowship award for 2010”. You can find out much more about the artists and their work from their website.
