St. Patrick's Festival in Downpatrick
Downpatrick’s saintly celebrations centre on the St. Patrick’s Festival, one of the biggest in the country. Down Cathedral is the reputed burial place of Ireland’s Patron Saint and, as such, the Festival holds special significance for the town.

The week-long extravaganza runs from Mon 12 - Mon 19 March and is crammed full of over forty opportunities to explore the life and times of our patron saint and participate in many events throughout the district.

Four Men and a Dog, Jake O’Kane’s Tear Gas Comedy Tour, Ashelin and many more performers will be at the Down Arts Centre during the Festival. Visit www.downartscentre.com or call the Box Office on (+44) (0)28 4461 0747 to book your tickets.

On  Sat 17 March, another two must-see Downpatrick attractions, Down County Museumtel. (+44) (0)28 4461 5218, www.downcountymuseum.com and the Saint Patrick Centretel. (+44) (0)28 4461 9000, www.saintpatrickcentre.com get in on the act with exhibitions, events and traditional Irish entertainment inspired by St. Pat.

And you can leave the car at Inch Abbey just outside the town and take the Shamrock Steam Train to Downpatrick Station (12:00 - 17:00) in time for the parade. Find out more at www.downrail.co.uk.

Then, from 13:00, U105 presenter Frank Mitchell and special guests will take to the Festival Stage in St Patrick’s Square to keep the crowds entertained. And at 14:30 celebrations culminate in the colourful Cross-Community Carnival Parade which, this year, embraces the theme 'Global Icons and Olympic Legends'.

The St. Patrick's Day annual pilgrimage from Saul's St Patrick’s Church to Down Cathedral, and the walk through St Patrick’s country, with a little surprise along the way, shore up this special day's activities.
