Belfast & Northern Ireland

Divis & Black Mountain

  Divis Rd      (+44) (0)28 9049 1002     more than a year ago
These twin peaks of limestone and basalt dominate West and North West Belfast's skyline. A BBC Transmitter masts sits atop Divis whose Irish name translates as black back. Thanks to a transfer in ownership in 2004 from the Ministry of Defence (who used it for army training and, allegedly, survelliance) to the National Trust, Belfast's highest peaks are now open to the public. The Trust has uncovered 2000 acres rich in biodiversity and archaeological interest, as well as constructing signs, paths and the Long Barn visitor centre. Walkers should be aware that this no Sunday stroll, though, and sudden changes in the weather can make conditions very treacherous. Ensure you come prepared- wear wellies and wet-weather gear and let someone know where you're heading. To get there take a Metro bus, walk or drive to the Upper Springfield Rd. entrance, then trek to the summit for amazing views stretching as far as Scotland on a clear day.

Andy L. The number 80 takes you no where near Divis/Black mountain. The number 80 runs from Westland to the city centre via Springfield Road.

It's a trying long walk from the Metro 80 or 81 service - maybe 90 minutes from the Glen Road to Divis Road. I've heard the Ulsterbus 106 dropping off at Hairpin Bend is better. Yes, though the mountain walks are well paved, with five variant walks taking between 2-5 hour round journeys. Dress warm, good walking shoes helpful, but wellies barely needed except were raining. A bottle of water is a good idea.
