Belfast | Where to Eat | Fish & Chips

Born in 1962, this enduring local legend has served many a punter with some of the finest fish and chips in town. Fresh catches of cod, whiting and scampi arrive daily from the Co. Down village of Portavogie and are cooked on site. And traditional homemade pasties, belly busting burgers and large f [...]

If you want good chips in a salubrious setting, 364 days a year (sadly, no fish suppers on Christmas Day), get yourself down to this award-winning potato palace with its olden days decor. Brass fittings, cosy booths, stained glass windows and an open fire set the scene for swish fish and posh pastie suppers. Takeaway open into the night for post-pub munchies. [...]

City centre fish and chip fans should make a beeline for this long-established cafe where the All Day Cod Supper is a thing of beauty and wonder (though not for the cod). Our humble fishy friend comes smoked, battered, breaded and in bites, with whiting, haddock and scampi also on the seafood menu. And the homemade chips are served as is, or smothered in pepper, cheesy, gravy or curry sauces. (See main listing in Cafes & Bistros). [...]

For almost a century, Long's has been serving misers, minions and millionaires its classic chips-with-everything fast-food fodder. The wood-panelled walls and formica booths provide an authentic chip shop backdrop for folk who like their food sans the fancy trimmings, designer vibe or faux-retro decor. Honest-to-goodness fried food from the oldest chippy in town. As they say in Belfast, you can't beat it with a big stick. Find it off Grosvenor Rd. [...]

First opening its doors in 1945, McNulty's has stayed at the top of the fast-food chain by making what's regarded by locals as the finest fish and chips in Ireland. Limavady is a beautiful little town that's on the main road to Derry and Coleraine so, if you're on the road and fancy a mid-journey snack, stop off McNulty's and enjoy some of the best fish and chips you're ever likely to taste! We simply love this counter-service chip shop for daring to offer students, suits and the slightly sozzled (it's on the pub-strewn Golden Mile) a fantastic array of fast food. Yes they've got the usual chips and burgers, but how about a baked potato filled with chicken in pepper sauce, lasagne and 'slaw or bacon, cabbage & mash to take away or eat in at their tiny metal tables. These Belfast guys and gals do it better than the big boys, so get stuck in.

Bangor is arguably the jewel in Co. Down's crown and no wonder.  It's a beautiful seaside town with great shopping, wonderful scenery and it's also home to The Frying Squad, one of Northern Ireland's most famous fish and chip shops. So after walking the marina and taking in the refreshing seaside air, a fish supper from The Frying Squad is the perfect way to round off your trip in Bangor. [...]
