Chorzów

As with much of the Upper Silesian industrial metropolis, there's a bit of a gray area (oh so gray) concerning where Katowice ends and Chorzów begins, but technically speaking Chorzów lies a mere 7 km northwest of Katowice. Between the two municipalities you'll find the Silesian Park of Culture and Recreation - one of the largest urban parks in Europe - and Chorzów has the lucky, if slightly arbitrary, distinction of claiming it within its borders. As a result, Chorzów can be described as a large, glorious park with a scrubby town attached at one end. While the Rynek (a word typically conjuring grand images of open space and pedestrian markets beneath charming architecture) in Katowice is little more than a tram stop, Chorzów has gone one better, converting their market square into a highway underpass (sigh). Unendowed with good looks, the town does have a high street - ulica Wolności (B/C-1) - around which you'll find its primary shopping and nightlife opportunities, and its one museum which insists on being closed every time we try to visit. Only a breezy tram ride away from the centre of Katowice, Chorzów is best enjoyed in the Park of Culture and Recreation (see the feature and Leisure sections), while the town proper has more than a few great bars worth exploring after dark and, perhaps sadly, ulica Wolności is actually one of the best promenades in the region. Throw yourself a parade.
